English 8

Hi everyone, we covered a lot in class today--good job!  This weekend, please read Chapter 8, and contribute to the Important Objects pages in the Collaboration Space of the Class Notebook for Tuesday evening.  This is the one place in the Teams notebook where students can see each other's work.

Additionally, please watch 20 minutes of the video called "One Killer Punch". This is only a section of a longer show, so I would like you to please start watching the video at the 26:44 minute-mark.  The show ends at 47:00 minutes.  Once you have watched this video, please write a reflection (that I will post in Assignments on Teams) on this segment.  What parallels do you see between events in The Outsiders and what happens in Ben's life in One Killer Punch? Please hand in your reflection by Monday evening.  Make sure that it is proof-read and clear.

You can find the link to the video HERE.

We read Thomas Gray's "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" today in class. On Monday, you'll read your mock epics, and then we'll look at "Elegy" greater detail and do a group assignment.  On Wednesday, we'll discuss your 2 questions and 2 quotes, 2 literary devices about "Elegy".  However, I would like you to please post one of your questions and one of your quotes to the "Elegy" channel in the left-hand sidebar of Teams by Sunday night.  You don't have to provide your answer.  I'd like people to respond after Monday's class. This will form the basis of our discussion on Wednesday.

Hi everyone, this week, please read to Chapter 6 and do the three discussion questions (that you can see in the left-hand sidebar of the Teams page), the Chapter 4 questions and the Chapter 5 questions (that I have now posted in Teams).  Our next class meeting will be at 11am on Monday, April 27.  Have a great weekend!

For homework this week, please answer the Discussion questions seen in the sidebar of Teams.  Also, please read up to Chapter 131.  Once you have done the reading, write an open-ended question about it and provide an answer in your Student Notebook.  Also, select a quotation that you like or think is important in some way and explain why you think it is significant.  Our next class meeting will be on Thursday, April 23 at 1 pm.  See you then!

Hi all, here's the link to The Rape of the Lock. Please look at this and answer the questions on the last slide before Thursday's class. Find the video link HERE.

Hello everyone,
If you go into your student notebooks, you'll see that I have made comments on your work so far.
For Thursday, I would like you to do the following:
  1. Tell me what you have found surprising about the book so far.  Please do this in 5-10 sentences.
  2. Tell me why you think the book has been written using emoticons and unconventional punctuation (such as strange capitals, italics, and bolded words).
  3. Christopher is both a highly intelligent person (he is a whiz at math and physics) but also rather oblivious about people, and it is apparent that he has the qualities of a high-functioning person on the Autism spectrum.  Some could say that he has Asperger's Syndrome, although this is never explicitly stated in the novel.  I would like you to watch the following 22 minute video and write a personal response (at least a paragraph) about what the interview subjects say.
The video is an episode from the CBC series You Can't Ask That where people living with various challenges are asked anonymous questions about what their lives are like.  This episode is about high-functioning people with Autism and you can find it here: https://gem.cbc.ca/media/you-cant-ask-that/season-1/episode-4/38e815a-010f385fad1
I will give you another assignment on Thursday.
Finally, I would also like to arrange a class meeting to discuss the book on Monday at 11 am. This time could change if too many students have a conflict with it; please let me know.

I have not assigned any more reading so that people who need to catch up to the rest of the class may do so. Please read to the end of Chapter 67.

Hi everyone,

I would like everyone to read Chapter 3 and complete the two sheets I have posted in Teams . If you do not yet have access to teams, you can find the handouts in the sidebar on the top right (scroll up) of this post under "English 8 Handouts/Assignments" (you will have to scan and email these to me if you are not in Teams).

If you are in Teams, once you finish both sheets, just click on "Turn In" in the top right corner of the assignment page and I will receive it.  I would like you to do this for 10am on Thursday.  On Friday at 11am, we will have our first video meeting.  I have sent you all an invitation through Teams.  On Friday, we will discuss the first three chapters of the novel.

Again, if you are still having issues with Teams, please send me an email as soon as possible.  Some people have gained entry to Teams since emailing me last week.  If you have still not gained entry, email me again, please.

I look forward to meeting up with you on Friday at 11am!
